Abstract

This dissertation explores the reasons as to why the UK decided not to intervene in Syria, essentially why the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine was seemingly passed over in this case study. The R2Ps doctrine came from a place of concern following the events of Rwanda and Bosnia, events that shocked the world. The international community had to redraw the boundaries to the word ‘sovereign’, which was previously used to allow states a sphere of non-interference from outside states. The main areas of focus being the challenges of operationalising R2P, and both the domestic and geopolitical hurdles to intervening in Syria. This analysis finds that the hurdles faced with intervention ultimately explains why the UK chose not to intervene.
