Walsh, Natasha (2022) Is it really a Garda matter?: a mixed methods study to evaluate what extent the attitudes and biases of Gardai toward domestic abuse, impact the decisions they make when responding to incidents of domestic abuse?. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Police officers are routinely the first responders to incidents of domestic abuse, their actions have the potential to influence the extent vulnerable victims engage with the Criminal Justice System. This study examines An Garda Siochana to identify biases and ascertain if the attitudes of officers impact the service delivered to vulnerable victims of domestic abuse. To answer this question a mixed methods study was conducted which surveyed and interviewed operational members of the force. Opinions were sought regarding organisational policy, police culture, the dynamics of domestic abuse, victim focus, and the appropriateness of training. Results identified biases toward gender and violence at incidents of domestic abuse. Training should be developed to address these biases and embed the victim-centric culture desired by oversight bodies.
