Cole, Robbie (2024) Public reactions to PBR and NPR character assets. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Modern video games utilise various differing artistic and technological styles in order to create their final visuals. This project consists of research on the differing effects and perceptions surrounding applications of PBR and NPR style rendering of an optimised game ready character asset. It includes exploration of the history and efficacy of the two rendering styles, and the utilisation of modern video game industry pipelines to aid in the bespoke creation of a character artefact to be used as the basis for primary research. Several metrics are examined and analysed resulting in a deeper, though not perfect, understanding of the use cases of, and reactions to, PBR and NPR characters, as well as identification of areas which could be aided by further study in the future.
