Prince, Emma (2024) How can the psychological study of design elements aid to the success of a design?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Graphic design is an intensively studied field, however, a correlation between the design principles and their psychological effects has not yet been established. This study investigates the psychological impact of essential design elements on an observer, and their responses. The research focuses on three fundamental design components: colour, semiotics and hierarchy. This project identifies patterns and trends that evidence each element’s psychological benefit to a design. After evaluating the existing information surrounding each subject, a poster design was produced to demonstrate the findings and establish the true impact these considerations could have on graphic design. An evaluation of the final design against earlier research confirms the importance of psychological considerations, particularly consumers association to the semiotics and colours. The results raise additional queries for further investigation into the specifics of colour variants and how the hue, tone and saturation may alter the association to each colour
