Abstract

Current methodologies across the creative industries vary widely and this diversity in approach, formatting and planning can lead to inefficient processes. This project explores current industry practice in VFX work pipelines and strives to analyse and test, with intent to improve, the efficiency of systems.
Through detailed interviews with 3 industry professionals, industry related online research and practical application, this dissertation breaks down and discusses development methodologies, analyses current industry standard pipelines, discusses the importance of these subjects with industry professionals, creates figures and methods for choosing the most efficient paths, and finally develops a portfolio piece to test and review findings. I also discuss how specific difficulties and bottlenecks in workflow inevitably lead to pipeline inefficiency. Feedback, collated at the end to inform my review, will be used for future pipeline development and project efficiency methods.
There are many different pathways to efficiency. This study explores the importance of thorough documentation, effective planning and communication and the pivotal role of up-to-date project management in achieving best efficiency. The answer to my question is not simple, it is ‘yes’ as efficiency is at the root of all sections and processes.
