Leung, Chun Ho (2024) Evolution of urban streetscapes. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This comparative study examines streetscape transformations in three global cities - Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Portsmouth - to enhance knowledge of dynamic urban environments. Through archival research and site observations, key historical, cultural, socioeconomic and planning factors influencing streetscapes over time will be investigated.
A mixed-methods approach explores distinctive street features, architectural patterns, transit developments and community initiatives in each setting longitudinally. Cross-city analysis identifies similarities and differences in evolving urban fabrics, highlighting the roles of cultural traditions, historical precedents, policy approaches and design interventions.
Findings seek to elucidate the preservation of cultural heritage and integration of modernization within streetscapes. Lessons drawn from each city's experience aim to provide evidence-based insights and exemplary practices to inform future street planning and management globally.
By fostering a comprehensive understanding of dynamic interactions shaping streetscape transformations, this research intends to support more informed urban decision-making and promote liveable cities as urbanization continues worldwide. The comparative global perspective adopted offers potential value to academic and applied urban research audiences.
